Jason Trollip – manager of a 5-star safari lodge
Jennie: What made you enter into the hospitality industry?
Jason: Wasn’t really the Hospitality industry I was looking for, but being a wildlife guide was my real passion. After 5 years of guiding I hung up my boots and sort of fell into Management of Lodges. My dream of living and working in the bush is what makes me happy every day. I do like to see the expressions on Guests faces when they see their first lion, or their first honeymoon turndown, when the tears of joy come out, it validates my job!
Jennie:What is has been your greatest challenge as a lodge manager?
Jason: Managing staff is much harder than managing Guests expectations. Keeping Staff focused, energised and passionate for 365 days a year is my ongoing greatest challenge. Its not a challenge cause staff are tough to manage, but because its so very, very important to get right.
Jennie: What is your strategy to overcome the challenges you face?
Jason: Set goals, achievable goals, let staff constantly feel they are achieving something, nothing better for your morale when you are feeling like you’re winning?
Jennie: In your opinion, what makes a five star lodge in the safari industry?
Jason: The right staff being employed is critical, if you get this right, you land up with staff who can do anything, make any Guests life amazing! Then you need a strong backer ($$$), there are days when you’ll need someone with deep financial backing. I’ve also learnt just how important its become to have a good Style and Decor expert working with you. You also need a Company mindset that’s based on creativity, innovation and energy…
Marketing is obviously also critical, Brand Strategy focus is something that becomes more and more important as times get tougher ..?
Jennie: Thanks Jason! From the moment I met you and watched you manage, I was impressed, thank you for the contribution you have made to the vast number of guests who have stayed at the lodges you have managed as well as all the lodge staff you have inspired to make the Tourism work! All of the best for the future!
